Driving for free with greenSANE? How much you can save by charging an electric car with renewables and energy storage
When diesel was around PLN 6 per litre, the cost gap between an EV and a diesel car was already obvious. When diesel climbed to PLN 7.59–7.75/l in March 2026, that gap became impossible to ignore. If you have solar PV and a greenSANE energy storage system, an electric car stops being merely “cheaper to run” — and starts getting genuinely close to near-free driving.
Key figures
EV: average consumption 15 kWh / 100 km
Diesel: average fuel consumption 4.8 l / 100 km
Grid electricity: PLN 0.70–0.90 / kWh
Average residential PV system size in Poland: 5.5 kWp
The most important takeaway
At current energy prices, the cost of driving 100 km in an electric car typically comes to around PLN 10.5–13.5, while charging from your own renewable generation can reduce that to roughly PLN 0–3. For a diesel car, the same distance currently costs about PLN 28.8–37.2.
1. What happened to diesel prices in 2026?
At the beginning of the year, diesel stayed close to PLN 6 per litre. In practice, the market looked fairly stable through early March. Then prices surged sharply. In just a few weeks, diesel jumped from roughly PLN 6.00/l to PLN 7.59–7.75/l. That shift immediately changed the cost of every kilometre driven.
Chart: diesel prices in 2026
The chart shows a clear transition from relative stability in January and February to a steep rise in March.
In practical terms, this means a fuel price increase of more than 28% in a short period. For a diesel driver, that is not an abstract market trend — it is an automatic increase in the day-to-day cost of using the car.
For the calculations below, it makes sense to use a realistic reference average of PLN 7.20/l. It is a fair benchmark — neither artificially low nor alarmingly high.
2. What does 100 km cost in an EV, and what does it cost in a diesel?
Diesel
With fuel consumption of 4.8 l / 100 km, the cost of driving 100 km looks like this:
| Scenario | Diesel price | Cost per 100 km |
|---|---|---|
| Low | PLN 6.00/l | PLN 28.8 |
| Average | PLN 7.20/l | PLN 34.6 |
| High | PLN 7.75/l | PLN 37.2 |
EV charged from the grid
With energy consumption of 15 kWh / 100 km, the cost of driving 100 km depends on the electricity rate:
| Scenario | Electricity price | Cost per 100 km |
|---|---|---|
| Low | PLN 0.70/kWh | PLN 10.5 |
| Average | PLN 0.75/kWh | PLN 11.25 |
| High | PLN 0.90/kWh | PLN 13.5 |
EV charged from renewables and energy storage
If the energy comes from your own PV system and is time-shifted thanks to a greenSANE storage unit, the cost of driving drops dramatically. When the car is charged using surplus solar generation or energy stored earlier, the real-world cost per 100 km falls to roughly:
PLN 0–3 / 100 km
This is exactly where energy storage proves its value: without it, part of your PV production is generated at the wrong time, and the car still ends up being charged from the grid. With greenSANE storage, the energy produced during the day can be used precisely when you actually want to charge your car.
3. Why is an EV cheaper to run than a diesel?
The key is not electricity price alone. The real issue is energy efficiency.
- An electric car uses around 15 kWh / 100 km.
- A diesel at 4.8 l / 100 km consumes energy equivalent to roughly 47 kWh / 100 km.
In other words: an electric car needs about three times less energy to cover the same distance.
This is the single most important technical reason why an EV is cheaper. Not because “electricity is cheap,” but because an electric vehicle uses far less energy to do the same job.
That is where the paradox comes from: a diesel may carry more nominal energy in the tank than an EV has in its battery, yet the EV is still much cheaper to operate.
4. How far can you drive “for free” with home solar PV?
The average home PV system in Poland is around 5.5 kWp. A system of that size can generate approximately 5,500 kWh per year.
If your electric car uses 15 kWh / 100 km, that annual output is enough for:
5,500 kWh / 15 kWh × 100 km = around 36,600 km per year
In reality, part of that energy is used by the household, part depends on the season, and part depends on how well the system is managed. That is exactly why energy storage matters so much: it increases the share of energy you can actually use to charge the car instead of sending it back to the grid at the wrong moment.
If you covered the same distance in a diesel car at an average fuel price of PLN 7.20/l, the cost would be:
36,600 km × PLN 34.6 / 100 km = around PLN 12,664 per year
That is why the combination of PV + greenSANE + EV starts to function like a private filling station.
5. Why do you need energy storage if the panels are already on the roof?
Solar panels produce electricity when the sun is shining. You want to charge your car when you get home, when you are planning a trip, or simply when you actually need that energy.
Without storage, you run into a familiar problem:
- during the day, energy is being generated but not always consumed,
- in the evening, the car needs charging but the panels are no longer producing,
- as a result, the car is charged from the grid even though your own energy was generated earlier.
A greenSANE storage system solves that problem because it:
- captures surplus renewable energy,
- stores it until it is needed,
- and releases it when the car or the house actually needs it.
greenSANE is not just a battery. It is a real mechanism for shifting energy in time — from the moment it is produced to the moment it is consumed.
6. How many times can you charge your car from a greenSANE storage unit?
Below is a simplified comparison for an EV with a 60 kWh battery. The figures show how many full charges one greenSANE storage unit can provide for home and office applications, based on usable capacity.
| greenSANE model | Usable capacity | Full charges for a 60 kWh EV |
|---|---|---|
| greenSANE FRIDGE | 52.8–57.54 kWh | around 0.88–0.96 charges |
| greenSANE OOH | 52.8–86.4 kWh | around 0.88–1.44 charges |
| greenSANE IT CUSTOM | 86.54 kWh | around 1.44 charges |
| greenSANE BABY HULK | 115.54 kWh | around 1.93 charges |
| greenSANE HULK | ~232 kWh | around 3.87 charges |
If you look at range rather than full charges, and assume 15 kWh / 100 km consumption, that translates into:
| greenSANE model | Estimated driving range from a full storage unit |
|---|---|
| FRIDGE | around 352–384 km |
| OOH | around 352–576 km |
| IT CUSTOM | around 577 km |
| BABY HULK | around 770 km |
| HULK | around 1,546 km |
These are indicative figures based on the storage unit’s usable capacity and average consumption of 15 kWh / 100 km. Actual results depend on the vehicle, temperature, driving style, and charging losses.
7. Calculator: diesel vs EV vs renewables + greenSANE
Enter the diesel price, choose the electricity rate, and select your EV model. The calculator will show the cost of driving 100 km in a diesel, an EV charged from the grid, and an EV charged from renewables, as well as how many times a given greenSANE model can charge the selected car.
Calculator assumptions: diesel 4.8 l / 100 km; annual PV output for 5.5 kWp ≈ 5,500 kWh; results are indicative and intended for comparing operating economics.
8. What does this mean for a greenSANE user?
If you have an electric car, solar PV, and energy storage, you stop looking at the car as just a means of transport. You start seeing it as part of your own energy ecosystem.
That is when greenSANE starts delivering real value:
- it increases the use of energy from your own solar panels,
- it lets you charge your car when you want — not only when the sun is shining,
- it reduces the cost of electricity drawn from the grid,
- it gives you greater independence from fuel and energy price volatility.
In practice, greenSANE can function as a private fuel station — one powered not by oil, but by energy generated on your own property.
